When you create a new user in the WordPress admin area, MailPoet automatically adds them to the WordPress Users list. Starting in version 5.10.1, you can choose the MailPoet subscriber status for the new user directly from the WordPress Add New User form. This gives you control over whether the user is immediately subscribed, needs to confirm their subscription, or starts as unsubscribed.
Prerequisites
- MailPoet version 5.10.1 or later
- Administrator access to the WordPress dashboard
How It Works
When you go to Users > Add New in the WordPress admin, you will see a new dropdown field labeled MailPoet Subscriber Status below the standard WordPress user fields.

The dropdown offers the following options:
- Subscribed: The new user is immediately added as a subscribed contact in MailPoet and can receive your newsletters right away.
- Unconfirmed (will receive a confirmation email): The new user is added with an “Unconfirmed” status, and MailPoet automatically sends them a confirmation email. They must click the confirmation link before they can receive your newsletters. This option is only available when signup confirmation is enabled in your MailPoet settings.
- Unsubscribed: The new user is added to MailPoet but marked as unsubscribed. They will not receive any newsletters unless they subscribe later.
Default Selection
The default selection depends on your signup confirmation setting:
- If signup confirmation is enabled: The default is Unconfirmed (will receive a confirmation email).
- If signup confirmation is disabled: The default is Unsubscribed.
Steps to Set the Status
- Go to Users > Add New in the WordPress admin.
- Fill out the required user fields (username, email, etc.).
- In the MailPoet Subscriber Status dropdown, select the status you want to assign to this user.
- Click Add New User.
The new user will be added to both WordPress and the MailPoet WordPress Users list with the status you selected. If you chose “Unconfirmed,” the user will automatically receive a confirmation email.

Note: This dropdown only appears on the Add New User form. It is not available when editing an existing user. To change the subscriber status of an existing user, go to MailPoet > Subscribers, find the subscriber, and edit their profile.
Tip: If signup confirmation is enabled in MailPoet > Settings > Sign-up Confirmation, the “Unconfirmed” option appears and is selected by default. This is recommended to ensure new users explicitly opt in to your newsletter, which helps maintain a healthy subscriber list and good deliverability.
Existing Subscribers
If the email address of the new WordPress user already exists as a MailPoet subscriber (for example, they previously signed up through a form but did not have a WordPress account), their global subscriber status will be updated to the status you select in the dropdown.
